How to Use the Tri-Square
The Tri-Square checks that a fitting or flange is square to the pipe before you commit to a tack. Each side of the square handles a different job:
Check from at least two positions about 90° apart around the pipe. A fitting can look square from the top and still be off from the side. Most fitters check, set a light tack, check again, and then finish tacking. Small corrections are easy to make before the joint is locked in.

How does the 3-in-1 Pipe Fitter Square compare to the 2-in-1 Sqaure?
The 3-in-1 Pipe Fitting Square is versatile, handling 45° and 90° fittings as well as flanges. On the other hand, the 2-in-1 square focuses on 45° and 90° fittings only and is smaller and more portable. For larger pipes or when flanges are involved, opt for the 3-in-1 Pipe Fitting Square.
Which size Tri-Square should I get?
The small Tri-Square (14″ x 10″) covers pipe up to 6″ and flanges up to 4″. The large (24″ x 17″) covers pipe up to 10″ and flanges up to 8″. If your work regularly spans both ranges, many fitters keep one of each: the small for tight spaces and everyday work, and the large for bigger runs.
Why does my square have small scratches or marks?
The Tri-Square is laser cut from 3/16″ aluminum sheet, and that material can carry small nicks or surface scratches before it is cut. These marks are cosmetic. They don’t affect the laser-cut edges, which are what make the square accurate.
